Description
This is a hybrid role in both cardiac clinical and Assisting in the Operating Room. Under the supervision of a Medical/Surgical physician and within the PA competence, the PA provides medical services to adult cardiac surgical patients. In the operating room, he/she acts as the first or second assist, open and endoscopically harvesting veins or arteries for CABG procedures, opening and closing the chest, cannulation, decannulation, etc. The PA is responsible for the planning and coordination of all aspects of the work up and care of the patients in the unit including management of MCS patients. The Physician Assistant promotes teamwork among co-workers and adheres to patient satisfaction principles. The Physician Assistant reports to the clinic director and to the designated physician.
Assists in surgery as needed.
Communicates in a positive manner with patients, families and co-workers.
Consults with Medical Director or designate as needed.
Coordinate ongoing overall patient care with physician staff, nursing staff and other ancillary care providers to ensure treatment plans are implemented.
Evaluate, diagnose and treat patients under the supervision of a licensed physician.
Maintains accurate patient medical records. Records pertinent clinical data.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of health issues in field of practice.
Makes appropriate referrals to medical and social service providers.
Obtains appropriate specimens for testing.
Performs microscopic identification of organisms.
Performs screening tests appropriate to patient's age, gender and condition.
Provides assistance in utilization of available healthcare resources.
Provides health maintenance education appropriate to patient's age and gender.
Record and interpret pertinent data (i.e., labs, diagnostic studies, discharge summaries, progress notes, etc.), including writing orders and discharges under the supervision of a licensed physician.
Reviews medical histories and performs physical assessments.
Rounds on inpatients as needed.
Requirements
Experience/Education Requirements:
Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant program
Completion of an approved Physician Assistant training program
Two years of nursing experience in a related field, Physician Assistant preferred
Previous physician office experience preferred
License or Certification Requirements:
Current license to practice in the State of Illinois
Certification as a Physician Assistant by a national certifying agency
Current CPR certification as staffing needs require
Membership in AAPA desirable
Current CME credits
1-3 Years experience preferred |
