Summary:
The APRN in this role will provide direct clinical services to individual patients with mental health diagnoses seeking treatment in services provided by Stormont Vail Behavioral Health Services, in accordance with the Kansas Nurse Practice Act, the written protocol and under the direction of the supervising physician(s).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 Perform all functions defined by basic nursing practice.

 Request for service is by consultation and patients will be rounded on in accordance with Medical Staff rules and regulations.

 Receive and accept consultations for pediatric, adult and geriatric psychiatric patients.

 Perform and record history, physical and psychiatric exam as related to the requested consultation.

 Order appropriate laboratory and other diagnostic tests and procedures.

 Assess normal and abnormal findings from the history, physical and mental examination, laboratory reports and other diagnostic tests and exams as appropriate.

 Manage the psychiatric treatment plan of care as related to the consultation, based on protocols adopted jointly by the advanced nurse practitioner and the supervising physician(s) and within the Kansas Nurse Practice Act under the direction of the supervising physician(s).

 Collaborate with the patient and members of the treatment team to provide for ongoing care, recommend community resources to meet patient and family needs.

 Instruct patients and family regarding medications and treatment instructions as well as provide patient medication.

 Demonstrate supportive behaviors for age specific care.

 Contribute and promote the delivery of high quality of care and customer satisfaction.

 Provide adequate discharge instructions and plan and make referrals when necessary and appropriate upon discharge.

 Provide the follow up physician’s office with information pertinent for the ongoing management of the patient health and mental well being.

 Abide by Medical Staff guidelines for patient care, appointment, reappointment and licensure requirements.

 Prescribe prescription medications following written protocol as allowed by Kansas Nurse Practice Act and in accordance with K.A.R.60-11-104a. DEA registration number is required for prescribing a controlled substance. In no case shall the scope of authority of the advance nurse practitioner exceed the prescribing authority of the supervising physician.

 Support Behavioral Health and nursing staff by participating and attending relevant continuing education when possible, and then providing acquired education to staff.

Education and Experience:
Must be a graduate of an accredited PA/APRN program. Meets educational preparation or other qualifications within specified time frames as determined/outlined by specific department policy.

Certification and Licensure:
Current RN and PA/APRN licensure in State of Kansas.

Be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners.

Additional certification required: Psychiatric Mental Health-Nurse Practitioner as recognized by ANCC or APNA.
