The APRN is a skilled health care provider and has successfully completed an organized program of education that provides specialized certification. This role manifests a high level of expertise in the assessment and treatment of actual and potential health problems of pediatric patients. The APRN will work on Arkansas Children’s Hospital campus with Pediatric Anesthesiology Service to assist with pre-anesthesia assessments and evaluations and ongoing post-anesthesia follow-up care as needed for pediatric patients and their families. In addition, the APRN may be asked to assist medical rounding as needed with care for pediatric patients being seen by the ACH Pain Service. The APRN may be required to order, interpret, and evaluate tests and studies to assess clinical problems and health care needs. This position will analyze and synthesize collected data, work independently and in collaboration with the physician consistent with board certification and organizational medical staff privileges, prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by prescriptive authority as indicated by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing and organizational policy. The APRN will be responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the UAMS Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology, and the mission of Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

60% Job Duties (Performs Role of):

Provides comprehensive patient care management within a collaborative practice model, with functions and duties as outlined in the physician/APRN practice agreements.

Provides culturally sensitive patient care that is in accordance with state licensure and regulations, and is based upon the standards of practice as defined by APRN certifying agencies (PNCB, ANCC).

Assesses, diagnoses, plans, implements, and evaluates care of the pediatric and adult burn patients working collaboratively with other health professionals using approaches that recognize each one’s expertise to meet the needs of the patients.

Serves in an advocacy role on behalf of patients, families, staff, and caregivers to ensure safe, equitable healthcare provision

Facilitates appropriate follow up care and/or refers patients (within the designated patient population) to the appropriate next level or site of care.

Consistently works to eliminate communication barriers, participating as a key member of an interdisciplinary team.

Serves as an educational resource for patients, families, health care professionals, students, and lay public regarding area of clinical subspecialty. Assists in development, creation and implementation of educational programs.

Utilizes research to identify, examine, and evaluate creative approaches to health care with the goal of improved outcomes for the patient and family. Participates in continuous quality improvement based on professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations.

Expands clinical and professional knowledge base. Accepts personal responsibility for professional development and the maintenance of professional competence and credentials. Continuously conducts self-evaluation of advanced nursing practice skills in an effort to ensure competent clinical care and continued self-development.

Demonstrates effective communication skills; communicates accurate and complete information; maintains strict confidentiality when necessary. Demonstrates positive working relationships with co-workers, management team, and ancillary departments; follows the Core Concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care and the Basic Code of Conduct Guidelines. Assist internal and external stakeholders as needed with exceptional customer service.5% The APRN will extend the patient care and administrative services of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences physicians.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner: Master's in Nursing from an accredited school/college of Nursing, current or eligible to apply for APRN license, National Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the specialty of Acute Care Pediatrics, must be eligible for prescriptive authority certificate granted by the ASBN. Minimum of 2 years of RN experience. RN license (AR or Compact state). Certification as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or eligible to apply.

Must be able to operate all typical nursing equipment essential to performing the job (e.g. scales, procedure equipment, needles, blood pressure equipment, ultrasound machines and EKG machines).

Must have normal communication sensory requirement.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred:

Previous Nursing Experience working with children and families

Previous ICU experience

Prescriptive authority and DEA license must be obtained after hire.

PALs, BLS certificationProficiency in pediatric physical assessment.
