Spectrum Healthcare Partners’ Orthopaedic Central Division in Auburn, Maine is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider II (Physician Assistant or NP with RNFA) to join our Spine & Total Joint team! This is a wonderful opportunity to work with busy, well established, and respected fellowship trained Orthopaedic Spine & Total Joint Surgeons.

This is a unique opportunity to become part of our thriving Spine & Total Joint service lines which includes a comprehensive Spine Center with Phsyiatry, an on-site ambulatory surgery center (ASC), MRI, in-house OT/PT and a dedicated team approach. The work includes both clinic and surgical assisting responsibilities. Our goal is to grow the Spine &Total Joint service lines through enhanced patient access, outlier clinic access, and ASC case growth.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Advanced Practice Provider II will provide access to patients requiring urgent appointments, including but not limited to: OrthoAccess, patients following up from ER visits and patients seen at their PCP’s office who require an immediate appointment. These medical services will be provided under the supervision of a physician. Serves as first assist to orthopaedic surgeons in surgery. Provides support/guidance to office staff and physicians in designated areas. Works with Clinical Services Manager and Director of Clinical Services to develop, implement, and facilitate practice policies and procedures relating to patient care provided by the Advanced Practice Provider group. Responsibilities also include: Assisting on Spine & Total Joint surgical cases as indicated (ASC/Hospital); Rounding on hospital based patients post operatively, as well as consulted patients; clinic duties include seeing New/Established patients, Follow-up, Post Op, performing Hx/Physicals; Call requirements; participation in Quality programs. May require travel to our regional clinics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Obtains complete medical history and physical data on patients.
2. Assists physician with emergency call and surgeries, functioning as a first assist, as required.
3. Interprets and integrates data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as needed.
4. Performs complete physical exams and records findings.
5. Collaborates with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
6. Manage stable chronic disease in the scope of Advanced Practice Provider II expertise, and refer patients with illness beyond the scope of expertise to the appropriate specialty or sub-specialty.
7. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
8. Administers medications and injections within scope of expertise.
9. Interviews and advises patients and family regarding treatment, health and illness prevention. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
10. Maintains and reviews patient’s records, charts, and other pertinent information. Posts test and examination results.
11. Uses Universal Precautions including personal protective equipment for anticipated contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides routine orthopaedic management of outpatient and inpatient care including ordering of diagnostic tests, labs, x-rays, and medications.
• Assesses patient health by interviewing patients, performing physical examinations, obtaining, updating and studying medical histories.
• Performs and assists in hospital rounds of patients.
• Documents patient care services by charting in the patient record.
• Performs therapeutic procedures by administering injections, and managing wounds.
• Instructs and counsels patients by describing therapeutic regimens and promoting wellness and health maintenance.
• Responds to telephone inquiries of patients and provides appropriate care.
• Works with the healthcare team by providing information and education.
• Practices a clinically sound continuum of care to ensure quality outcomes in an efficient and effective delivery of services.
• Exhibits a leadership presence within the community.
• Maintains compliance with regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies both regionally and nationally.
• Maintains communication with physicians and staff regarding patient care.
• Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the clinic.
• Keeps abreast of current issues involving patient care or practice issues by attending and participating in department, team and practice meetings.
• Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment.
• Proactive in identifying, reporting and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Graduate of an accredited school with a degree as a Physician Assistant or a Nurse Practitioner; orthopaedic experience beneficial.
• Physician Assistant with Maine Licensure and certification by NCCPA or Nurse Practitioner, with Registered Nurse and RN First Assist Maine Licensure required.
• DEA registration required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification required.
• Demonstrated clinical competence in relevant area of practice.
• Thorough knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, with particular knowledge of the musculoskeletal system.
• Current knowledge of medications and their effects on the human body.
• High level of organizational skills, effective time management and delegation strategies.
• Comprehensive knowledge of nursing practices and standards, medical procedures, and clinical/administrative skills necessary to perform all functions and assist physicians.
• Ability to make and communicate well-reasoned decisions, both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to see and articulate both the larger picture and operational steps needed to achieve practice-related goals and objectives.
• Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, families and other health care providers.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
