Oncology Nurse Practitioner Job Description Overview:
Under supervision of the physician, provides primary care to oncology patients as an assistant to the physician. Scope of responsibility includes expert practitioner, educator/teacher, care management,
consultant, nurse researcher, and nurse leader. No oncology experience is needed, but ideal NP candidate would be eager for opportunity to learn management of oncology patients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Obtain health histories by performing complete physical examinations and psychosocial
assessments, interprets findings from the examinations, establishing a problem list and plan of
care.
• Performs clinical and diagnostic procedures.
• Provides diagnostic and pharmacologic management of the disease process and treatment of
side effects through ongoing assessment, intervention and education in collaboration with the
physician in the office and hospital setting.
• Works within the guidelines established in Nursing Protocol, Chemotherapy Guidelines,
Admixture policies and Quality Assessment/Quality of Care.
• Provides case management for patients and their families when required, while utilizing
available resources to help navigate acute, ambulatory, and home care settings.
• Through collaboration, provides clinical expertise throughout the various phases of illness
including prevention, detection, diagnosis, acute care, palliative care, rehabilitation, and
survivorship.
• Collaborates with other members of the clinical care team to develop, implement, and evaluate
protocols.
• Serves as a resource for the nursing staff by providing information being studied in clinical
trials.
Required Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and
evaluate patient care.
• Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe working
environment.
• A working knowledge of basic computer skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience:
• Masters of Science in Nursing from an accredited program for nursing education and
successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner program.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
• RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in Florida.
• Current Florida certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Current CPR and ACON certification required. |
